Exploring Downtown Traverse City: The Warehouse MRKT

Northern Michigan is known for its natural beauty from bright turquoise lakes to adventurous hiking trails and sand dunes that extend into Lake Michigan. Scattered across the region (see “Northern Lower Peninsula” in image) are small towns with boutique gift shops and quaint coffee shops. Though the northern region is certainly popular for landscape photographers and the adventurous type that loves water sports, the big cities are not to be missed! One of the most popular city tourist destinations is Traverse City. I love this area! They have delicious wineries, breweries, restaurants, and festivals (including the famous National Cherry Festival)!

Recently, I had the opportunity to explore the newly remodeled Warehouse MRKT in downtown Traverse City filled with shops and activities for all ages to enjoy…

Warehouse MRKT – Shopping

The marketplace is worth a stop if you’re in Traverse City! They have cute boutique shops selling everything from clothes and jewelry to antique goods and home furnishings. Shops include Relish, Wood + Cloth, Grey Wolf Creek, Waara Technologies and a weekly pop up store called “MRKT Share” that takes place on Saturdays from 10-3 PM. They have a variety of goods for any shopper. My personal favorite is Relish, they have colorful jewelry, handbags and dresses.

Warehouse MRKT – Food & Drink

I went to the Market with my family and our first stop was the BLK\MRK coffee shop. We spent some time here enjoying a cup of coffee and the nice breeze that came through the open windows. The coffee shop has a small outdoor area to enjoy the weather and also several tables inside. It’s a great place to set up for work or catch up with friends.

For dinner, we went to Alliance, a restaurant inside the Market with a progressive sharing style menu. Everything they serve is beautifully presented. The staff is also very attentive, friendly, and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed the rib eye steak, scallops, and pork shoulder. Our most memorable and favorite dish was the Thai-Fried Chicken with crispy rice, jalapeno, cilantro, and mint! We could have ordered 10 more of those.

Warehouse MRKT – Activities

Before dinner, we had time to explore some activities at the Market. We first stopped at Darling Botanical Co, where you can build your own terrarium garden in a glass bowl! I absolutely love anything DIY and really enjoyed the process. We first selected our favorite plants and built our own by mixing soil and sand and designing how we wanted it to look. While we did it ourselves, you can also host your own terrarium party at the store.

The market also has a shop called Handz On Art where you can paint your own pottery. They have a large work station area and you can select from a massive collection of ceramic pieces (bowls, plates, tiles, etc). It looked like the perfect place for a birthday party and is family friendly.

Beyond gardening and pottery, the Warehouse also has a fitness studio called Modus 45. They offer barre and yoga classes that cater to all levels. It was actually closed when I went but I peaked inside and it looked to have a few exercise rooms!

Overall, I really enjoyed exploring the newly renovated Warehouse MRKT and definitely recommend a visit on your next trip to Traverse City, Michigan.

Please note I was welcomed as a guest by Traverse City Tourism. As always, all opinions are my own.
