Tips For Learning A New Language

Hola, Hallo, Bonjour, Aloha, Ni hao, Hej, Kon’nichiwa,

Hellloooooooooo there! I’ve already covered why you should learn a new language, but now I want to discuss the next step. Whether you’re in the early stages of learning or trying to keep the momentum going, here’s how you can stay on track. It is easier said than done. I looked up some motivation quotes to get us started:

"Nobody said it would be easy, so don't ever give up when it gets hard."

"Remember why you started. Don't give up, find a way."

Language Learning: Tips For Success

Language learners need to immerse themselves into the language as much as possible. This could mean a number of different things, but ultimately if you’re not spending time learning the language, in whatever way is best for you, then you’re not being serious. If your goal is to become fluent then know the road to getting there, especially as an adult, will be filled with ups and downs. I used to claim I was fluent in Spanish back in the day, but now I’ve lost it given I don’t practice regularly.  The times I feel the most fluent are the times I am abroad and immersing myself into the day to day. I’m able to practice it everyday and force myself to use it more than I would otherwise. When an opportunity presents itself to practice, take advantage.

Not everyone has the time to move abroad and immerse themselves in a new culture. I was excited to learn about italki because it provides a super convenient and effective way to learn not only the basics of a new language but also a platform to be able to become fluent. You may not have time to learn an entirely new language, but maybe that’s not your goal anyway. One of the cool things with italki is that you can download it on your phone and use it on the go too (iOS and Android compatible). You should set realistic expectations for yourself, especially given learning a new language is no easy feat. Make them “SMART” goals: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. Use different learning methods: listen to podcasts, make friends who speak the language, read what you can and practice whenever an opportunity presents itself. If those opportunities don’t come up then create them via online language tools (such as italki). Be consistent,  stay focused, and one day you’ll start dreaming in another language.
